With the debut of Torch of Montclair, an online nonprofit magazine, we begin from this place — that the mission of high-level journalism and storytelling is to lift people and places out of caricature.

How will we achieve that?

By rejecting received wisdom, avoiding easy labels and finding layers to stories that might otherwise go unexplored. By telling readers something they did not know — framing our stories with a new perspective.

We are calling our debut a soft launch, but as a magazine we will be building our cadence with regular features, while also including compelling video and audio pieces. Subscribe to receive emails when we publish new stories.

Look out for investigative work that makes news. 

We will search out the nexus between Montclair and the wider region and even the state. And we will remain mindful of the longer arc of stories, connecting one generation to the next. We will find the “big” stories while always appreciating that the “smaller” stories, approached with nuance, can reveal the heartbeat of a community.
