Our Mission
Finding the Connections. Exploring the Nuance.
The journey we’re embarking on is simple but ambitious.
In creating Torch of Montclair, an independent nonprofit online magazine, our goal is to bring layered, in-depth coverage to the issues that impact Montclair, and by extension a wider swath of New Jersey. We believe we are filling a breach left by large news organizations that have significantly reduced local coverage, leaving local government unchecked and vital stories untold.
Part watchdog, part storyteller, our aim is to serve the public good, effect change, engage a diverse audience, and capture the way people truly live. We place a premium on transparency and ethics.
We will hold elected officials accountable while staying alert to how the workings of government play out on “Main Street.” We will highlight the ways issues affect a range of people — from those who have lived in Montclair for decades to those new to Montclair, from young professionals to older residents, homeowners and renters, new businesses and long-established ones, immigrants, seniors, teachers and everyone who feels an attachment to Montclair.
